In 1263 a Bohemian priest, Pietro from Prague, who had doubts about the truth of the transubstantiation, was travelling from Prague to Rome to remove these doubts.
While he was celebrating the mass near to the tomb of St. Cristina in Bolsena, he saw pouring blood from the consecrated white Host and wetting the corporal with the liturgical linens. The Pope Urban IV who resided in Orvieto, informed of the fact, sent the Bishop James to Bolsena to double check the event as well as to move the blooded linen to Orvieto. On 11 August 1264 the Pope showed the Corporal to the population and later, with the ���Transiturus��� Bull, officiated by St. Thomas Aquinas who resided in the town, extended the Celebration of the Corpus Domini to all the catholic world.
Since then, each year in Orvieto, on the Sunday after the celebration of the Corpus Domini, the Corporal of the Bolsena���s miracle, contained in a precious reliquary, recently produced by goldsmiths of Orvieto, was brought in a procession along the town���s streets following the route passing through all neighbourhoods and the most significant places of the town.The Religious Procession together with the Historical Parade proposes again the first procession painted in a fresco within the Chapel of the Corporal, where you could see the religious and civilian authorities coming out and meeting the Pope arriving from Bolsena. The religious and civil parade tells the history of the miracle and of the administrative as well as social system in that time. It���s a careful reconstruction, started in the 1950s, with over 400 characters wearing costumes, helmets, armours and emblems belonging to the Orvieto noble families as well as to the militias, produced by able hands of local expert craftsmen.
The religious procession is composed of Vatican authorities, representatives of the religious orders, Knights of the Holy Sepulchre, brotherhoods, charitable associations and pilgrims of the Via Romea - whose Umbrian segment has been activated for the first time.

Nel 1263 un prete boemo, che aveva dei dubbi sulla reale presenza di Cristo nell'ostia, era in pellegrinaggio verso Roma per fugare questi dubbi.
Giunto a Bolsena, mentre celebrava messa presso la tomba di S. Cristina, vide stillare sangue dall'Ostia consacrata e bagnare il corporale cio�� il tessuto di lino usato nella liturgia. Il Papa Urbano IV che risiedeva ad Orvieto, informato del fatto, invi�� a Bolsena il Vescovo Giacomo per verificare l'accaduto e trasferire ad Orvieto il lino insanguinato. L���11 Agosto 1264 il Papa mostr�� il Corporale al popolo, e successivamente, istitu�� con la Bolla \"Transiturus���, la Festa del Corpus Domini estesa a tutto il mondo cattolico.
Da allora, ogni anno ad Orvieto, la domenica successiva alla festivit�� del Corpus Domini, il Corporale del Miracolo di Bolsena, oggi racchiuso in un moderno reliquiario, recente opera di orafi orvietani, viene portato in processione per le strade cittadine seguendo il percorso che tocca tutti i quartieri e tutti i luoghi pi�� significativi della citt��.La Processione Religiosa insieme al Corteo Storico ripropone la prima processione dipinta in un affresco trecentesco nella Cappella del Corporale, dove si vedono uscire dalla citt�� le autorit�� religiose e civili il popolo che vanno incontro al Papa in arrivo da Bolsena. Il corteo religioso e civile racconta la storia del miracolo e l���ordinamento amministrativo e sociale di quel periodo.Una ricostruzione attenta, iniziata negli anni ���50, con oltre 400 figuranti che indossano costumi elmi, armature e stemmi delle famiglie gentilizie orvietane e delle milizie, fatti da abili mani artigiane locali.
La processione religiosa �� composta autorit�� del Vaticano, dalla rappresentanza degli ordini religiosi, dai Cavalieri del Santo Sepolcro, dalle confraternite, dalle Associazioni caritatevoli e, quest'anno, da pellegrini della Via Romea tratto umbro attivata per la prima volta.
