L’ultimo fine settimana di settembre i quattro rioni cittadini di Gualdo Tadino si sfidano per ottenere la vittoria e il privilegio di bruciare l’effigie della Bastola, colei che secondo la storia avrebbe appiccato l’incendio che distrusse il paese.
Le vie e piazze che si tingono dei colori delle Porte di San Benedetto, San Donato, San Facondino e San Martino.
Lo scambio dei doni tra le porte, le esibizioni degli sbandieratori e dei musici del venerdì danno il via ai Giochi, mentre le taverne accolgono gli ospiti offrendo piatti e specialità tipiche.
Sabato è il giorno dello spettacolare corteo storico: oltre mille figuranti in costumi d’epoca quattrocentesca attraversano le vie della città, riportandola nel Medioevo tra stregoneria, musica, arti e mestieri di altri tempi.
La domenica è dedicata alle tanto attese gare tra le porte che si affrontano in quattro diverse competizioni che culminano nella corsa del somaro a pelo (senza sella).
Una festa vera che riserva un crescendo di emozioni fino all’ultimo gioco, che si conclude nel tripudio generale intorno al rogo di un gigantesco fantoccio raffigurante la Bastola, il personaggio a cui la leggenda assegna il ruolo di irriducibile strega, nemica di Gualdo.

The last weekend of September, the four city districts of Gualdo Tadino face each other to obtain the victory and the privilege of burning the effigy of the “Bastola”, the one who would have set the fire that destroyed the town, according to the story.
The streets and squares are alive with the colors of the “Doors” of San Benedetto, San Donato, San Facondino and San Martino.
The Games start with the exchange of gifts between the “Doors”, the performances of the flag-wavers and the musicians of Friday. In the meanwhile, the taverns welcome guests by offering typical dishes and specialties.
Saturday is the day of a spectacular historical procession during which more than a thousand participants pass through the streets of the city in fifteenth-century period costumes, bringing the town back to the Middle Ages among witchcraft, music, arts and crafts of past times.
Sunday is dedicated to the long-awaited games between the “Doors” which face each other in four different competitions that culminate in the donkey (without saddle) race.
A real party that arouse a crescendo of emotions until the last game which ends in the general rejoicing for the burning of a gigantic puppet depicting the Bastola, the indomitable witch and the worst enemy of Gualdo, as the legend goes.
